The steel industry is shifting and it impacts us all

As several major Nordic steel producers move from traditional blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces, as well as new companies are entering the Nordic market, the demand for scrap will rise fast. In fact, we’re already facing a scrap shortage across Europe, a shift that’s pushing more companies to secure alternative raw materials, and also control and utilize their own residual streams.

At Carbomax, we believe this challenge also opens the door to smarter and cleaner recovery of residuals. By using oxidic residual materials and combining them with carbon, we can produce high-quality briquettes, perfectly suitable to substitute other raw materials with a low environmental impact if the carbon source is biochar – a solution that fits perfectly into a more circular steelmaking process.

This becomes even more important with the introduction of CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), the EU’s new regulation that places a carbon price on imported, emissions-intensive goods. It’s a development that will affect all our customers – some more than others – but one thing is clear: the market is changing.

How are you affected so far?
