A JOURNEY
BUILT BY PEOPLE
When Robert Idegren founded Carbomax in 1992, the ambition was to create value for clients through product knowledge, availability and a deep understanding of metallurgical raw materials and processes.
What began as an entrepreneurial company has, over more than three decades, developed into an established Nordic industrial partner in metallurgical raw materials, carbon products, alloys and recycled materials.
But the Carbomax story is not only about one entrepreneur and the decisions made during the company’s early years. Just as importantly, it is about the people who have built the business, developed its expertise and created long-term relationships with customers and suppliers over the years.
This development has taken place step by step – through investments, new business areas, acquisitions and new material solutions, but above all through the knowledge, commitment and responsibility of our employees.
From an entrepreneurial company to an established industry partner
Carbomax grew organically during its first decades. New areas of business were added, the offering expanded and customer relationships developed into long-term partnerships.
As early as 2002, the company was certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, reflecting an ambition to take a structured approach to quality and environmental responsibility.
At the same time, an extensive international network of suppliers and producers was being built. Knowledge of different raw materials, alloys and their applications became an important part of Carbomax’s expertise.
Over time, this knowledge has become a shared asset across the organization. Through many years of experience, our employees have developed a deep understanding of both the raw materials market and our customers’ industrial processes.
Investments that transformed the business
An important milestone came around 2011, when Carbomax invested in its own briquetting plant. The investment created new opportunities to develop our own products and process residual materials from different industries.
It also opened up opportunities for customers to briquette their own process residues and return them to production. The experience gained from this work later provided an important foundation for the development of products based on materials such as biocarbon.
In 2014, Carbomax acquired AB Ferrolegeringar, broadening the business within alloys and metals while adding more than a century of industrial experience.
Behind these investments and strategic decisions was an organization responsible for turning opportunities into practical solutions. Product development, customer dialogue, purchasing, logistics and technical expertise have all been essential in ensuring that these investments create long-term value.
The people behind Carbomax
For many years, Carbomax has built an organization where employees have been given the opportunity to develop alongside the company. Several people have been part of the journey for many years and have therefore also helped shape the company along the way.
Responsibility and involvement have always been important parts of our culture. Over the years, key employees have also been offered co-ownership, creating long-term commitment and a shared sense of responsibility for the company’s development. Today, this collective expertise is one of Carbomax’s most important strengths.
Our employees bring different experiences and areas of expertise, but share an understanding of our customers’ needs and the industrial processes in which Carbomax products are used. Their work has also made it possible to develop new solutions in recycling, briquetting, biocarbon and other circular materials.
The company’s development is therefore the result of many years of building knowledge – and of people taking responsibility for moving the business forward.
From the Nordics to an international platform
In 2022, Spiltan became a co-owner of Carbomax. The company later became part of Traxys, a global company in commodities and materials.
These changes in ownership create new opportunities for Carbomax and provide access to a larger international network. At the same time, the Nordic market remains an important part of our business, and our long-standing relationships with customers and suppliers remain firmly in place.
The relationship with Traxys had also been established many years before the change in ownership. Becoming part of the group was therefore a continuation of an already well-established partnership.
A foundation to build on
As the founder of Carbomax, Robert Idegren has played a central role in the company’s development since 1992. His entrepreneurship, industry knowledge and network have all been important parts of the Carbomax story.
At the same time, the Carbomax of today is the result of more than three decades of work by many people. It is our employees who have developed the relationships, built the knowledge, solved the problems and moved the business forward from its entrepreneurial beginnings to the organization it is today.
Robert Idegren will continue to contribute his experience and perspective through his role on the Board of Directors. The next phase of Carbomax’s development, however, will build on the collective expertise of the entire organization. It is the combination of experience, new perspectives, entrepreneurship and shared responsibility that creates the conditions for our continued development.
Carbomax started with an idea in 1992. Since then, many people have helped turn that idea into reality. It is this shared journey that has shaped the company – and that provides the foundation for the next chapter.
